First Workbench

An early version of my workbench, with the Hot Head torch.

The bench is an old Steelcase table from the 1960's. It's been resurfaced variously over the years. At the time of this picture it was trying to be nonconductive (for reasons unrelated to glass working) so it was topped with a layer of asphalt-like compound and then polystyrene resin. This was not such a good choice for hot work :-)

The torch is clamped to the traditional Hot Head torch holder, a bent stainless steel sheet, with hose clamps. The holder is then attached to the workbench with one C clamp, visible just behind the torch.

The kiln is sitting at my right. On the bench are some glass rods (to the right of the kiln) and some mandrels (to the left). At the far left, near the camera, is a blue thing with a white cord wrapped around it: that's the heater that I used on the MAPP gas tank to keep it from icing up and depressurizing.
