This is a slice of a graphite rod about 4 inches in diameter, from which I cut slices like this to serve as marvering pads. I thought I'd try cutting a couple of slices, polishing them nicely, and using them as kiln shelves to get a smoother back surface. This is what happened to the graphite after being fired to 1600 deg F with a small fused piece resting on the centre of the disk. The entire graphite slice, which was shiny and graphite-gray when it went into the kiln, came out matte, darker, and porous.
