Here's the back of the ugly test piece -- see those huge divots? My best guess is that the graphite slice outgassed and blew these holes into the back of the piece. A lot of the graphite seems to have sublimated in the intense heat, and presumably the gases had to go somewhere. Also notice that I didn't do such a good job of polishing the graphite, and you can see the marks from the coarser grade of sandpaper (I was impatient and didn't really finish the polishing job). The good news is, I could probably make some very fine, very accurate impressions in the back of the glass by lightly carving the graphite. The bad news is that each piece of graphite would probably be usable only once.
