Another view. You can see that the gray area is actually in slight negative relief (because the "saved" area of the graphite did not sublimate and ended up proud of the main body of the shelf by 1/64in or so). The discontinuity can easily be felt with fingertips. Note the marked difference between the gray matte surface produced by uncooked graphite, and the textured but shiny surface produced by cooked graphite.
