The latitude is not dissimilar to the northern bits of Japan, and the landscape is reminiscent. The water here is clean and deep; on the outer rocks it has that dark, glassy electric-blue colour I remember from coastlines far further South. Forests of bull kelp sway slowly in the surge. Sound, smell and sight are all acutely nostalgic; the sensation of homecoming is so strong it is almost an ache. I've missed the Pacific far more than I realised.
